Khao Manee

The Khao Manee is one of the ancient Thai breeds of cat first described in the 14th century. It is a natural breed, embodying the unique type and colour qualities that has attracted cat fanciers to the cats of southeast Asia for nearly 200 years. The name means “White Jewel” and breed lore says it was coined by Thai monarch Rama V, who supposedly bred them in the royal palace. Whether this is true or simply as association between a traditional cat breed and a beloved Thai historical figure, these cats are certainly striking! With their lustrous white coats and typical odd eyes, they are quite distinct from their more established cousins. Khao Manee eyes are wide range of shades and colours, from amber to copper, peridot to emerald, aqua to ice blue to sapphire. Odd-eyed is the most characteristic look, with one blue eye and one amber or green eye. Mosaic eyes (two colours on one eye) is particularly interesting and welcomed on the show bench. They are recognizably an Asian cat in terms of type, with a foreign build designed for a tropical climate. Personalities are outgoing, human-oriented, and confident - with the chatty voice seen in their distant cousins, the Siamese and the Korat.

Type & Judging Remarks
Foreign in build. Lithe but not extreme with an athletic but never bulky body. Head is a modified wedge with high cheekbones, and together with the ears, forms an equilateral triangle. Profile is straight yet slightly convex. Eyes are wide and open with a distinct Asian slant. As this is a traditional Thai breed, non-visible tail kinks are permitted.
