Notes
The Black Russian Terrier is actually not a terrier at all, but a robust working dog that was created during WWII, by crossing Giant Schnauzers and Airedale Terriers. These dogs were later crossed with Rottweilers, and finally with a dog called 'Moscow Retriever', which originated from a Newfoundland/German Shepherd cross.
The Black Russian Terrier was once considered a very aggressive breed, perhaps not surprising seeing how it was bred to be a powerful and rather dangerous military dog. Modern Black Terriers, however, are considerably calmer, though the breed still requires an experienced owner.
The Russian Terrier should have a elongated and quite broad head, with a marked stop and powerful muzzle. The ears are small and triangular, the neck long and powerful. The chest is deep and broad with a slight tuck up. The tail is set high and thick. The coat is wirey and thick.
